Names are declarations of intent, and choosing one for a new organisation is an exercise in honesty. We considered many. We chose Bridges because it described, more precisely than any alternative, what we believe the nonprofit sector most needs.
Two shores
On one shore stand people and institutions with something to give: professionals with skills, companies with retired equipment, foundations with funds, universities with students eager to serve. On the other stand organisations doing indispensable work with too little: the food bank run by volunteers, the tutoring programme in a church basement, the health charity with a single van.
Between them flows a river of friction — unfamiliarity, mistrust, administrative complexity and simple lack of time. Good intentions on both sides often fail to meet, not for want of will, but for want of a crossing.
What a bridge is — and is not
A bridge does not replace either shore. It does not claim the land on either side, nor does it tell travellers where to go once they have crossed. It simply makes the crossing possible, safe and repeatable.
That is the discipline we try to observe. We do not seek to become the charity; we seek to strengthen it. We do not seek to own relationships between donors and causes; we seek to make them possible and then step aside.
Engineering, not sentiment
Bridges are also works of engineering. They require careful design, sound materials and regular maintenance. Sentiment alone never carried anyone across a river. In the same way, collaboration between organisations requires structure: clear agreements, reliable systems, honest reporting and people accountable for keeping the crossing open.
An invitation
Every bridge is built from both banks at once. If you have something to give, or something you need, we would be glad to meet you in the middle.
