Digital Literacy Program

Confidence online, for everyone

Hands-on digital skills training for seniors, newcomers to Canada, job seekers and young learners — taught in small groups, in familiar places, by patient volunteers.

Status: Accepting founding partners and volunteer instructors

Overview

Why this matters

The challenge

Everyday life has moved online: job applications, banking, health services, school portals and government benefits. People without basic digital skills are left relying on others for tasks that should take minutes.

Seniors, newcomers and low-income families are most affected. Many community organisations would like to help, but lack a ready curriculum, trained instructors and devices to teach on.

Our approach

We give partner organisations a complete, ready-to-run programme: a plain-language curriculum, trained volunteer instructors, loaner devices and simple progress tracking.

Classes run where people already feel comfortable — libraries, community centres, places of worship and settlement agencies — and move at the pace of the learner.

A person who can apply for a job, book a clinic visit or video-call family on their own has gained more than a skill. They have gained independence.
What the programme includes

Everything a partner needs to deliver

01

Plain-language curriculum

Eight modules from switching on a device to staying safe online, with printable guides.

02

Small-group classes

Six to ten learners per class, with a volunteer for every three participants.

03

Loaner devices

Refurbished laptops and tablets available for class and, where possible, to take home.

04

Online safety

Recognising scams, strong passwords, privacy settings and two-step verification.

05

Multilingual support

Materials and volunteers in the languages our partner communities speak.

06

Certificate of completion

A certificate learners can add to a résumé or settlement file.

How it works

Four steps from idea to impact

  1. 1

    Partner with us

A community organisation hosts the programme and helps recruit learners.

  2. 2

    Prepare

We train volunteers, deliver devices and agree the class schedule.

  3. 3

    Learn

Learners complete the modules over six to eight weekly sessions.

  4. 4

    Graduate and continue

Graduates receive certificates and can join drop-in help hours.

Partners we are looking for

Built together, or not at all

Every initiative is delivered through partnerships. These are the organisations that make this one work.

Libraries and community centres

To host classes in trusted, accessible spaces.

Settlement agencies

To connect newcomers with the programme.

Technology companies

To donate devices and sponsor employee volunteers.

Colleges and universities

To offer student volunteer placements.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do learners need their own device?

No. Loaner devices are provided in class. Where supply allows, learners who complete the programme can keep a refurbished device.

How long is the programme?

Six to eight weekly sessions of about two hours, followed by optional drop-in help hours.

Can the programme be delivered in other languages?

Yes. We match volunteers and translated materials to the communities each partner serves.

What does a host organisation provide?

A room with power and Wi-Fi, help recruiting learners and a contact person. We provide the rest.
